Psychoanalysis and American Elementary Education

BEFORE Freud, mental disturbances were generally understood to be organic in origin. Psychoanalysis grew out of discoveries made by Freud that these disturbances were often better treated by psychological means than by medical approaches. Because he developed his therapeutic method and theory simultaneously, the term psychoanalysis has since come to refer to a loosely knit theory of mental processes, to the techniques by which these processes are investigated, eg. , dream analysis, and to a therapeutic procedure. In assessing the impact that psychoanalysis has had on American elementary education, we have restricted our analysis in certain ways. Thus, in the discussion to follow, it is primarily the theory of psychoanalysis that we assess for its impact on education, with other issues brought in only occasionally. We also concentrate on what is generally referred to as “orthodox” psychoanalytic thinking; psychoanalytic schools such as those represented by Alfred Adler are given only minimal consideration.
